Yay!! we did it.
Trying CrossFit was one of my major goals for this year. Of course I had lot of doubts in my mind- “Am I fit enough to do Crossfit? What if I cant do it? How embarrassing it will be in front of rest all the people?” and the list of all kind of negative question can go on… But a part of me really wanted to give it a shot.
Mradul was always pumped about this idea and one evening after work, we stopped by a Crossfit Center to learn about whats, hows and whys. Okay, one interesting thing that I came across while doing my research, Crossfit centers are not called gyms, they are called boxes because they literally resemble like a box, with no fancy stuff, only bars, weights and ropes. As we entered the Box, I saw people practicing snatches and clean, some drenched in sweat and just rolling and stretching on floor. We were greeted by one of the coach, Malik. He gave us a brief introduction about what exactly is Crossfit, what kind of workouts, gave us a tour of the box and then we spoke about membership. I was thrilled to learn that they were offering 50% off on a one month unlimited class for the first timers. It was great deal , so we completed all the formalities and enrolled ourselves for one month. Malik asked us to come in on one of the Saturday’s before we actually begin Crossfit to do the Fundamental class.
So far, all our lifting movements were self learned by watching the YouTube tutorials or reading the blogs, we never lifted under supervised training and that was the main reason I was so looking forward to learn the movements and techniques from a coach.
Last Saturday, we reached the Box at 9 AM for a 2 hour class to learn all the fundamental movements and get a feel of what Crossfit is all about.
Sigi, another coach, was waiting for us and upon our arrival he had us checked in and sign the waiver form. We were a group of four, two guys and two girls, small and sweet. The first hour was spend learning the different kind of movements like Air squats, Overhead squats, Shoulder Press, Deadlift, Jerks, Cleans etc. The minute detail that Sigi was explaining about each movements made me realize how I was missing on small things about form. He payed great deal of attention to each individual.
The second hour of the class started with learning all the basic workouts like rowing, abs, push ups, pull ups etc. and we did really well in showing our skills here:)
Now, wait for the fun part, we all were supposed to do baseline workout. It is performed in an all out sprint to measure the level of fitness and endurance. I was pretty nervous to get my butt kicked. 500 m Rowing, 40 Air Squats, 30 Sit ups, 20 Push ups, 10 Pull ups or Ring Rows in as less time as we can.
Managed to finish this entire set in 6 mins 20 secs but DAMN, those 6 mins were enough to get a person out of breathe, I was dead on my feet.
The ‘High-five’ with the group felt so powerful. It was a total bonding thing over excitement, happiness and satisfaction of finishing this fundamental class with a BANG and we wrapped up the session with some cool down and stretching.
Now about the first Crossfit class, some real WOD’s (stands for Workout of the day), which we did on Monday of the next week. First 5 mins was dedicated to warm up and then 3 reps of bench presses going from light set of weights to the heaviest you can. Sigi was coaching us again that evening and since it was our first class, he had extra eyes on us. He took 5 mins to explain the WOD. and Oh Boy !! I was just praying to survive by the end of everything.
Started with a 2000 Meter row and the target time to finish this was under 10 minutes. I went a little over time and finished it in 10: 30 secs. My heart rate kept soaring as I started to hit the box jumps and to my surprise, I was able to jump on a 24 inch box(I never thought I could jump any higher than 14 inch). By the time I finished the rest 8 workouts and was on the verge of collapsing, I realized, Oh God !! the 1.25 mile run is waiting. Haha !! Pushed my self out of the box and started running. 4 laps of the building, my run was actually slow than walking, last lap was comparatively faster as I kept telling myself, “Come on Aki !! just one last round”. As I entered back in the box, first thing I checked was my finish time, 45 mins. Decent would be the range of 30 – 40 mins, but never mind, I was just so PROUD of my self at that moment 🙂 I was glad that I did not throw up, all the time I was thinking what if I need to puke, which direction should I run to :p
Blended with all kinds of compound movements, metabolic conditioning and strength training, I was amazed with the Crossfit regime in just one class. It is definitely expensive, 155$ for unlimited monthly, 100$ for 10 classes, one of the major factors to consider if we can do this long term, but right now we are excited to try this for one month and then decide if we want to be regular Cross-fitter.
PS : Don’t be scared of a new work out routine, just go ahead and give it a shot 🙂
